1962 Stephens motoryacht

Year 1962
Length 43 ft
Builder/Manufacturer Stephens
Price
$79,000

Stephens was one of the finest yacht builders on the west coast and this is a superb example of one of their most popular designs: the twin cabin, galley down motoryacht with a semi-enclosed pilothouse. The Stephens were all expensive custom builds, and this particular example (hull no. M-95, built for a Florida yachtswomen) has had nothing but the best since she was launched.

Impeccably maintained by her three long term owners over the past 40-some-odd years, she's been updated throughout but of course retains the stately traditional lines for which Stephens are so well known. Note she's had almost $350,000 spent on her just since 2011 (with almost $100,000 of that over the past year alone)  and really must be seen to be appreciated.

Some highlights: just out of the yard with major work done including stripping, reefing and recaulking the bottom, replacing the shaft logs (this is an expensive and thankless job but eventually it always HAS to be done) and paint from the bottom up to the toe rail (December, 2021, the hull is a beautiful gloss white), low time on new twin 375 hp Crusaders (2012), new 7.5kW Westerbeke genset (also 2012), hull refastened with silicon bronze screws, totally refurbished interior including gut rebuild of galley and flawlessly refinished brightwork, completely rewired (and shorepower service upgraded from 30 to 50 amp), updated electronics, etc., etc., etc. This one of the last Stephens to be built by hand of old-growth mahogany and as such she's irreplaceable; note it would cost upwards of $2 million to build a functionally equivalent Anabelle today--and that's IF you could find the skilled craftsmen and wood to do so!

A yacht of this pedigree and condition comes on the market only rarely, so she's a must see for those individuals looking for an immaculate classic.

Accommodations and Layout

Forward cabin has V berths and ensuite head, aft to U shaped galley down starboard with dinette port. Up aft to light, spacious galley from which up aft to pilothouse and aft deck or down aft to master stateroom.

Master stateroom has twin bunks port and starboard with a built in desk in between and private access to head with separate glass stall shower. Note the portlights built in to the transom; these are WONDERFUL but most examples of this model didn't have them.

Also note that the interior is bright and airy throughout and feels larger than expected on a 43 footer. Interior has been TOTALLY redone throughout and shows practically as new--note just the new flooring alone in the two staterooms cost almost $16,000!

Galley and Head

Galley down, totally redone in 2012 at a cost of well over $20,000. Designer iron sink with hot/cold pressure water (20 gal. AC-fired hot water heater), GE microwave/ convection oven, under-counter refrigerator/freezer. Two Raritan fresh water flush electric heads.

Electronics and Navigation Equipment

Updated electronics including Garmin 740S color chartplotter with 36 mile radar overlay and depth sounder, Simrad AP28 autot pilot, Icom VHF radio. Intellian active tracking satellite receiver into 20' flat screen TV custom mounted in enclosed cabinet with DVD player.

Electrical System

110V AC / 12V DC. Fifty amp shorepower service along with Westerbeke 7kW genset (2002, this was a $10,000+ job) genset. Note vessel extensively rewired in February '05 with $18,000 paid then, more rewiring in 2014 (for the new interior lighting, running lights and helm--another $10,000!).

Deck and Hull

Carvel planked Phillippine mahogany with glued seams over oak frames with apitong stem, teak decks aft and Honduran mahogany superstructure, boat refastened in 2010 and the hull is as fair and bright as the day she was launched, as is all brightwork--this is as fine an example of a classic Stephens as you'll ever see.

Two foredeck mounted Danforth anchors with chain and line rode, Sampson post. Six mooring cleats, stainless steel stanchions with stainless caprail forward, varnished mahogany aft.

Note new (2014) Lewmar electric windlass with new hawse and custom polished stainless steel anchor guard on hull side--this is a beautifully fabricated installation (at a cost of about $12,000). Bottom stripped/reefed/recaulked, shaft logs and seven planks repaced and boat painted from the bottom to the toe rail (late 2021).

Mechanical Equipment and Engine Details

Just over 300 hours on brand new (in 2012) fresh water cooled Crusader engines with Z-F four-bladed DynaQuad props. Note this was a $45,000+ job.
