Custom METAL-CRAFT-MARINE-LONG-RANGE-PILOTHOUSE-TRAWLER - main image

2006 Custom Metal Craft Marine long range pilothouse trawler

location icon Benicia, California
Year 2006
Length 50 ft
Price
$299,997

Custom built by a professional boat builder as his personal yacht, this go-anywhere trawler must be seen to be appreciated. Built to the scantlings of a 65 footer and with a 4,000 mile range provided by her low time Cat 3306T (this is widely regarded as one of the most rugged and dependable engines Caterpillar ever built), Away Out is a rugged, sea kindly vessel finished to yacht standards and will make a fine cruising platform--built on an efficient commercial fishboat hull, she leaves almost no wake at cruising speed.

This vessel was built by Benny Alls, owner and founder of MetalCraft Marine of Port Hadlock, WA and Avila Beach, CA, who spent decades building steel commercial vessels for the challenging and unforgiving conditions of Alaska and the Pacific Northwest. Mr. Alls later founded Allseas with his son Tim, and their 92-footer was featured on the Travel Channel show Extreme Yachts. (google "Allseas Yachts" and you'll quickly get a sense of what we're talking about here).

A master craftsman in steel fabrication, Mr. Alls made sure that the strongest and best materials available were sourced, then paid close attention to the smallest of details in surface prep, the welds themselves and the coatings used to prime and paint--the topsides are so fair the welds are invisible. They say that God lives in the details, and nowhere is this more apt than in building a steel boat!

And with Away Out, the results speak for themselves; as noted above, the vessel really must be seen to be appreciated--she shows practically as new inside and out, and the engine room looks more like a Navy ship than a pleasure boat (but the galley of a Navy ship wouldn't have soft-close solid wood dovetailed drawers like this boat!).

Under the care of her knowledgeable second owners since 2013, she's had a heavy duty bow thruster installed, her interior extensively reworked (including a major refit of the galley which included the addition of a commercial grade propane range), hull recently painted and a new Northern Lights 5kW genset was just installed in June of 2019 (at which time the bottom was painted as well, this was about a $25,000 yard bill not including the owner's time!).

Another major price reduction late November 2020 and out of state owners encouraging offers. Vessel lying Benecia and shown by appointment, please.

Accommodations and Layout

Board via robust fold-up swim platform then thru transom door into cockpit from which either up five steps to expansive cabintop or thru commercial grade Manly dutch door into bright, open, full-beam salon and galley area. This space has been recently remodeled (with the galley in particular having been almost totally redone) and has long, comfortable settees port and starboard with the port side featuring a custom swiveling dining table. Rich mahogany walls, recently laid teak & holly sole.

From here, forward into companionway from which down to amidship master stateroom or up three to pilothouse with 360 degree visibility provided by a dozen windows and a Manly dutch door, then further forward and down to guest stateroom with single 6' 6 berths and heavy duty cast bronze 12" portlights (from a Liberty ship) port and starboard, and full en suite head with stall shower.

Master stateroom is just forward of amidships and beam-to-beam so very spacious and features a walk-around double, a custom built mahogany desk/vanity, heavy duty cast bronze ports (again from the Liberty ship) either side, ample storage and full en suite head with stall shower.

Note 6' 5 headroom through most of the boat, six beautiful cast bronze portlights salvaged from a Liberty ship (with glass 12" in diameter and 3/4" thick, these really are works of art!), all systems easily accessed for maintenance.

Deck and Hull

Steel hull built out of 1/4" A36 steel welded using 7018 rod, longitudinal ribs on 12" centers, hull is fully insulated with fire retardant foam and has an integral rub rail of 3/8" wall thickness Schedule 80 pipe solid welded (not spot welded) to hull. All plate was wheel-abraded on both sides prior to construction, then coated with a zinc-rich primer (and all welds were spot blasted and recoated after construction).

Deck, house and bulkheads (four of 'em, all full height) of 3/16" steel plate. Skeg-hung rudder, rudder is 2" stainless stock and 1/2" plate steel inner core.

Once completed, the entire exterior of the vessel was swept-blasted and recoated yet again with zinc-rich commercial grade two part primer, then sprayed with several coats of high build epoxy and the hull top coated with Petit Seattle Grey one part polyurethane (which is easier to touch up than LPU), deck top coat is Behr water based paint that's abrasion, oil and chemical resistant (as well as easy to touch up when needed!).

Bottom painted in Z-Spar ablative bottom paint (most recently in June, 2019).

105 lb. CQR anchor on bow roller machined from 8" stainless stock shafting with bonze bushings on a 1" hardened steel shaft, hydraulic on-deck fisherman style heavy duty windlass with 200' of 1/2" High Test chain shackled to 65' of 5/8" open link galvanized chain. Engine and Mechanical

Single 6 cylinder four cycle Caterpillar model 3306 PCT diesel engine, dry stack and keel cooled. Prior to install in Away Out in 2006, the engine was situated at a PG&E substation to be used as an emergency backup generator; it reportedly has only about 2,000 hours clocked TOTAL (and on visual inspection it looks brand new!), burns about 3 gph cruising.

TwinDisc MG-509 deep case transmission with 4" Aquamet 21 stainless steel shaft to four-bladed bronze prop, hydraulic steering via wheel and jog stick. Side-Power SE150/250TC 24V 10" 11hp electric bow thruster (2013, this was about a $25,000 project!).
